I have titled this newsletter “Your Body’s Many Cries For Water” based on the groundbreaking research done by Dr. Batmanghelidj with the book titled by the same name. Working as a chiropractor since 2014, I have seen hundreds of patients plagued by the same issues of dehydration including: Headaches - Heartburn - Overeating - Muscle Pain - To name a few!
Let’s examine lower back pain as an example of how dehydration can cause joint pain, we will examine below.
Here we have an image of the lower back, most of the forces of the spine go through the L4/5 disc(second last disc). 75% of the weight of the upper body is supported through this disc! It is a tough disc with a big job, however with chronic dehydration the disc starts to lose its jelly like centre. This along with general wear and tear can cause inflammation in the joint and people come to see me with low back pain.
Chiropractic adjustments help with the inflammation but ultimately the forces throughout the spine need a nice lubricated L4/5 disc with hydrostatic pressure to spread out the force- water! TIPS FOR WATER? - How much to drink? Weight in pounds / 2 = water in ounces each day. Example - 150 lb woman/ 2= 75 ounces or 2218 mL. This does not include coffee or juices - just water. - Most people are dehydrated upon waking, drink a large glass in the morning. - Be wary of coffee and tea with caffeine, as this has a dehydrating effect. -
Invest in a full house filtration or a Berkey System which is convenient for renters. The charcoal filters allow chemicals and toxins to be removed.
Drink and store water in class containers - avoid drinking from smoky plastic containers such as a water bottle left in a hot car. - Sea Salt is a necessary mineral for our bodies, some people that struggle to drink enough water may benefit from adding a pinch of unprocessed sea salt. - Be wary of drinking soda and juices instead of water. Known adverse health affects of displacing water include- tooth decay, sugar addiction, insulin resistance, osteoporosis, and kidney stones Further reading and resources: Your Body’s Many Cries for Water - http://www.watercure.com Your Water Matters - Vancouver - https://yourwatermatters.com
